California has eight main land regions: Klamath Mountains, the Coast Ranges, the Central Valley, the Sierra Nevada, the Cascade Mountains, the Basin and Range Region, the Transverse Ranges, and finally the Peninsular Range. These Regions are all really unique.

The first land region in California is the Klamath Mountains. The Klamath Mountains include several small forest covered ranges in the northwestern corner of the states. Deep canyons break up some of these ranges. Also, some of the peaks are 6,000 to 8,000 feet high!

Another Californian land region is The Coast Ranges extend southward along the Pacific coast.California’s famous redwood trees grow in this area. Some sections of mountains have their own name in this region. The Diablo, the Santa Cruz, and Santa Lucia are some of the names of these mountains.

The Central Valley region lies between the Coast Ranges and the Sierra Nevada. Central Valley extends 450 miles from northwest to southeast. This is fertile land for the largest and most important farming area west of the Rocky Mountains. A  large amount of crops are produced in this region.

California’s Sierra Nevada Region is located east of the Central Valley. It forms a rock wall that is 400 miles long and forty to seventy miles wide. Some of the peaks in this area are more than 14,000 feet high. One peak is Mount Whitney which is one of the highest peaks (14,494 ft) in the state.

The fifth land region of California is the Cascade Mountains. Unlike other California ranges the Cascades were formed by volcanoes. Lassen Peak is an active volcano in the southern Cascades. Mount Shasta was once an active volcano as well.

The Basin and Range Region is part of a larger region that extends into Nevada, Oregon, and several other states. Death Valley is also a part of this region. Irrigation has made the land good for growing crops.

A group of small mountains known as The Transverse Ranges are located between Santa Barbara and San Diego. They’re called the Transverse Ranges because they extend eastwest on the fault lines. Some ranges  within the Transverse Ranges include the Santa Maria, San Gabriel, and San Bernardino.

California's final land region is the Peninsular Ranges. The Peninsular Ranges cover most of San Diego. The Agua Tibia, and Laguna are included in this region. There is also a mountain system southward into baja (lower) California.
